Lake Norman sunset

From nostalgic patriotic parades to community festivals with firework displays to myriad planned and spontaneous raft- up (boat) parties on Lake Norman, there truly is something for everyone here in the greater Lake Norman area this 4th of July. Get out of your home, save gas and have a great time!” I wrote this EIGHT years ago and it is still just as true this year. So, here is the run down on Lake Norman’s 4th of July festivities 2017:

Saturday, July 1st at 11:00am the 10th Annual Troutman Independence Celebration Parade will be held on a 3-mile route from the Iredell County Fair Grounds ending at the Troutman Elementary School. (Highway 21).If you want to experience a slice of true, old-fashion, small-town Americana, this is a must attend parade. The streets are lined with flags, yellow ribbons and folks of all ages, many with signs honoring our military past and present. The parade itself has about 150 entries including floats with United States Veterans from all of our wars, military units, WWII Vehicles, local clubs and civic organizations, beauty queens and just about any thing you can imagine including at least one John Deere Tractor! This year Our 2016 Grand Marshals are “The National Guard and Reserves”.  Again this year the parade is followed by the Troutman Independence Day Festival at the fairgrounds from 5:30-9:30 pm, ending with a breathtaking fireworks display at 9:30!

Celebrate our country’s freedom at the Lowe’s YMCA’s Summer Celebration on July 3rd for one of the biggest, baddest Independence Day fireworks show in the Lake Norman area. Festivities start at 4:00 pm. 15,000 – 20,000 people are expected to gather at and around the Y for family fun, music, food vendors and – of course – FIREWORKS! The celebration will kickoff at 4 pm with activities for the kids including inflatables, face painting, games, and balloons. Featured bands include: Matt Stratford Band at 5:30 and at 7:00 p.m.  At 8:45 PM Maddie Huecker performing the National Anthem and at 9:00 PM the Fireworks Spectacular. The event is free and open to the public but all proceeds from sponsors and vendors will benefit the Lowes Community Support Campaign. Get there early to find a good parking spot!

The Town of Huntersville will be hosting their 12th Annual Fourth of July Celebration on Monday, July 4th from 10:00am – 1:00pm at Birkdale Village…a family-friendly celebration! Join Birkdale Village as we celebrate our nation’s 240th birthday with a gigantic family festival! Stage performances, face painting, balloon art, bounce houses, craft tables, bike decorating & patriotic bike ride, music, roaming entertainment and more! Plus, the annual Huntersville Fire Department water fight at 12:15pm Admission and Parking are FREE!

The Town of Davidson will be holding its annual downtown parade and concert on Tuesday, July 4th. Citizens are invited to celebrate our nation’s independence with a homespun, downtown parade and a concert on the green. The parade will include a color guard, a fire engine, and lots of patriotic residents. Participants Parade marchers are asked to line up at McEver Field on South Street at 5:15 p.m., and the festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. All citizens are encouraged to march in the parade dressed in Independence Day attire and to decorate their wagons, bicycles, tricycles, and pets in red, white, and blue. A color guard comprised of members of the police and fire departments will lead the parade up South Street onto Main Street and onto the town green. The Concert on the Green will begin at 6:00 p.m.

4th of July firework’s display at The Point’s Trump International Golf Club in Mooresville at 9:30pm. This will be the fifth year of fireworks at the golf club community. In the past the mortars and shells for the show were so large that the Fire Marshall’s office required New York-based BAY Fireworks Pyrotechnic Engineering to notify the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport that night so airplanes could be directed to a different flight plan!!! For residents and members of The Point and Trump International Golf Club Charlotte there are a whole day of activities offered starting with a tennis round robin at 9:00am.

Take a cruise on Lake Norman and watch a fireworks show from the water. There isn’t much information yet on their website other than the dates: July 1st – 4th and location:  Queen’s Landing, 1459 River Highway, Mooresville.  I would check their website or call for more information.

Our wildlife is one of the things that makes Lake Norman such a special place to live.  While we are so close to shopping, restaurants and just about everything you can think of, at home we experience myriad types of wildlife.  From deer and foxes to bunnies and turtles, we see nature everywhere, but nothing is more amazing than our birds!  I have a Certified Wildlife Habitat back yard and our 16 feeders have activity every day of the year including Blue Birds, Cardinals, Golden Finches, Carolina Wrens, various and colorful woodpeckers, hummingbirds and so many more. But if you are lucky enough to live in a waterfront home on the lake or have a boat, then you will have many opportunities to see the stunning, graceful Heron and amazing Osprey.
