This past week the Mooresville-South Irdell Chamber of Commerce launched a new program “Buy Local, Invest in Your Community” in an effort to raise awareness to the need,  especially during these financially challenging times, to support our local business.

Today I am launching my own effort to support our local businesses in the Lake Norman communities by creating a new weekly feature here on Lake Norman Real Estate:  Business of the Week.  Each week I will write an informative article about one business in our community including pictures, links and contact information so that all of my readers can support this business.

I have quite a few stores and restaurants that I would like to feature but I am also inviting you to submit your favorite local business or even your own business.  The only rule it that it must be owned, operated and located in Mooresville, Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville, Troutman, Denver, Sherrills Ford or Terrell.  Either email me the information or leave it in the comment section.

These are tough times for everyone, even in our normally thriving Lake Norman communities.  It’s not just about housing and real estate anymore.  I have friends and clients in all kinds of businesses and industries that are struggling and I want to help!  By all of us working to support each other we CAN make a difference!

View a new “Earth Friendly” green home today, July 19th and tomorrow July 20th in Lake Norman! Pippin Home Designs has opened their “Live Green Project” home in partnership with Habitat for Humanity to raise money for Women’s Build, a program to build adequate homes for mothers and children. The “Live Green Project” home is located at 7390 Gabriel Street in Sherrills Ford on the northeast side of Lake Norman. Tickets are $11 and they are open 10am – 6pm.

“Project Live Green” is actually the personal home of Jennifer Pippin, owner of Pippin Home Designs. She decided to make her major expansion of her 1200 square foot Lake Norman cottage a model for environmentally-friendly building here in Lake Norman. “One of my goals when I build my own home was to educate the community about green techniques on both a small and large scale” said Pippen in a Mooresville Tribune article.

The small lake cottage “has been transformed into a 4,459 square foot Green Showplace in Sherrills Ford, North Carolina on Lake Norman….and was recently recognized a the USGPC and the Charlotte Business Journel’s inaugural Green Advocate of the Year and her business was recognized as Green For-Profit Business of the Year” according to their website: Project Living Green.

Some of the green features of this Lake Norman home include:

  • Evaluating the home and the direction of the sun before construction
  • Energy-Star certified
  • Use of landscape shading to keep home cool
  • Use of natural lighting
  • Sun-Tempering, Solar Water Heater
  • Rainwater Collection System
  • Sustainable/Renewable Floor Products such as bamboo, cork and Marmoleum
  • Cellulose Insulation or Icynene Foam
  • Minimal disturbance of the site: Erosion control and tree protection
  • Energy Star rated windows and doors
  • Energy Star rated appliances, lighting, and exhaust system
  • Low VOC paints and Sealants

This project was created by Pippin Home Designs, Spivey Construction and ptidesigns Interiors LLC and implemented with the help of Green Design experts from around the world.

In my past article How to Predict the next Lake Norman hot-spots I started a series about three up and coming communities along the shores of Lake Norman: Denver, Troutman and now Sherrills Ford and Terrell.

Just north of Denver, located in southeastern Catawba County with wonderful street names like Molly’s Backbone and Slanting Bridge, are the two small but growing towns of Sherrills Ford and Terrell. Once considered one of Lake Norman’s best kept secrets, these two quaint towns are committed to holding on to their agricultural traditions and to preserving their rural beauty despite being targeted for significant growth in the next five years.

The Facts:

  • Sherrills Ford was named for Catawba pioneer Adam Sherrill who crossed the river in 1747 and built his homestead on the west bank
  • Founded in 1747
  • The population is about 4155
  • Tax rate: .5400
  • Location: Northwest corner of Lake Norman in Catawba County
  • Unincorporated; administered by the Catawba County commissioners and manager
  • Catawba County Schools

 

Much like its neighbor to the south, Sherrills Ford and Terrell are destinations for those wanting a more quiet and rural retreat. However, the Crescent Community of NorthView Harbour in Sherrills Ford, an active, lake front upscale community offering heavily wooded home-sites, a swim club with competitive-size swimming pool, club house, tennis courts, play ground and boatslips is just part of Crescent Resources “ambitious plan that will continue changing the face of Catawba County.

Future plans for Sherrills Ford and Terrell include:

  • 635 acre development along Molly’s Backbone with estate-size parcels of over 6 acres
  • 800 acre development fronting Island Point, Racoon Tract and Azalea Roads
  • The Sherrills Ford Village Center along NC 150 which will include single family homes, townhomes and more than 500,000 square feet of retail and office space.
  • Terrell Village Square, an upscale retail/professional center located next to the future Village of Sherrills Ford
  • Extending a new sewer line along NC 150 from Mooresville
  • The Catawba County commissioners have applied for a grant to buy the 600-acre Mountain Creek tract at Lake Norman for a future regional park that could include hiking trails, canoe access and recreation center.

Current home prices in Sherrills Ford and Terrell range from $50,000 to $10,500,000 with an average sales price this past January 2008 of $516,250.

The local hangouts include the two gas stations that flank Sherrills Ford Rd: The Gold Mine 66 & Grocery and The General Store. With the opening of the newest Harris Teeter and numerous shops at the corner of NC 150 and Perth Rd., residents no longer have to drive all the way to Williamson Rd for large grocery stores, cleaners and Starbucks coffee!

Also located in a refurbished 1876 homestead in Sherrills Ford is the wonderful restaurant: Tim Schafer’s At Lake Norman. Mr. Schafer is considered to be the foremost authority on cooking with beer in the entire country and has appeared on the Food Network, HGTV and other food related productions sharing his passion for cooking with beer.

So, if you are looking for a Lake Norman home that is away from the hustle and bustle of the I-77 but still close enough to take advantage of all of the nearby amenities, I highly recommend that you visit Sherrills Ford and Terrell.

Maybe it’s because it is 102 degrees outside, I don’t know, but all of a sudden cool fresh fruits and vegetables sound so good to me. I have had this stack of information about our local farmers markets, farms and produce stands for weeks so it’s high time I finally share all of the information with you!

Just like our daffodils and tulips, as spring arrives in Lake Norman our local produce stands and farmers markets start to come to life. Anytime between April and June you will being to see fresh plants, local honey and jams made over the winter and the first of our spring harvests. You don’t need to look more than a few miles In the Lake Norman area to find a great selection of official farmers markets as well as numerous road side stands selling not just the seasonal fruits and vegetables but fresh pies and other home-made goodies. Every week their signs will announce new arrivals like green peanuts, peaches, okra, corn, local blueberries and pumpkins. Some even open to sell Christmas trees and wreaths.

 

BLUEBERRIES are at the very top of my list! I harvested my first crop these past couple of weeks and supplemented them with ones from the local produce stands. I eat them by the carton!

My favorite local produce stands are Josh’s Produce Market on Williamson Road which is open Friday – Sunday and then on an honor system for whatever is left, and a large produce/plant stand on Brawley School and Stutts Road. By the way, Josh’s carries Nana’s Pies which was rated as one of the best pies in Charlotte. This week she had peach, sweet potato, apple and pecan. Yes, I have gained a couple of pounds since moving here!

Here is the list of our area’s farmers markets:

  • Mooresville Farmers Market: Wednesdays and Saturdays from 6a.m. – 10 or 11 @ Church Street in Downtown Mooresville
  • Huntersville Farmers Market: Tuesdays and Saturdays from 7a.m. -1:00p.m. @ Main and Maxwell, one block east of Townhall . www.huntersville.org
  • Lincoln County Farmers Market: Saturdays 8a.m. until sold out @ Rock Springs Elementary School
  • Catawba Valley Farmers Market: Tuesdays and Saturdays 7a.m. until sold out in Newton on North Ashe Street
  • Charlotte Regional Farmers Market: Open year round but times and days vary. For more information: www.ncagr.com “Farmers Markets”
  • Center City Green Market: Saturdays 8a.m.-1p.m. @ Seventh St. between College and Brevard
  • Statesville Farmers Market: Wednesdays and Saturdays @ Sharpe Street beside the police department
  • Lincoln County Farmers Market: Thursdays and Saturdays 7a.m. until sold out @ 250 Water St. in Lincolnton.
  • Downtown Hickory Farmers Market: Wednesdays 2p.m. – 6 and Saturdays 7a.m. until 1 @ 232 Government Ave.

 

There are also some wonderful farms where you can buy and even pick seasonal fruits and vegetables like Carrigan Farms in Mooresville.

All of these farmers markets open and close different months of the year and times and dates will vary so it is a good idea to check your local newspaper before going. Or check out the North Carolina Farm Fresh wesite.
