Meet Zoey, my sweet and adorable kitty who, when not playing the piano, loves sitting on my lap “helping” me work. Three years ago in January I was working on a new waterfront listing on Lake Norman which had on it an old cabin and was tenant occupied.  When I walked through the door on that cold night my eyes went right past the house to the sliding glass door facing the lake.  There was this cute little kitten face staring at me.  I walked right passed everyone to the door, went out and picked up the shivering little kitty.  She purred louder than any kitty I have ever heard.  She curled up on my shoulder and snuggled into my neck.  It was love at first sight and I knew then that I had to help her.  Apparently she had been abandoned as a tiny kitten and the tenants were feeding her outside.

I love drones! This is one of my favorite photos of my new listing in The Point because you can see Lake Norman and get a real sense that this home is not only stunning but how it is truly surrounded by trees and just around the corner from the lake.  I am planning to write my next post about drone and 3-D photography and how it helped to sell this property in one day.  Stay tuned!

Stunning Lake Norman Sunset Calendar

Download this month’s Lake Norman calendar here

It is amazing how glassy the water had to be on this beautiful evening on Lake Norman to create such a perfect mirror image of the trees along the shore, the clouds and the stunning sunset.  A huge thank you to my past client and friend Betty Ann for sending me this for my monthly calendar!!  The longer I stare at it the more artistic details I see, especially how the water accentuates the colors, the shapes of the clouds and the sky itself.  How wonderful to have been able to capture and share this instant of nature’s beauty on our very special lake.

Lake Norman in the snow

Yes, we do have snow here!  I actually took this photograph last year but our recent snow looked just about the same.  One of the top reasons that my relocating buyers give for wanting to live in the Lake Norman area is our 4 mild seasons and most of the time that is very accurate.  It just happens that once every winter recently we have had one “real” snow where is sticks and schools are closed.  We do own a snow shovel but this is our 11th winter here and we didn’t get it until last year! Spring is finally here! April truly is my favorite month of the year here in Lake Norman. All of our trees turn the most brilliant shades of green, flowers abound and our Carolina Blue Skies and sunshine give me such a boost of energy.  While I love Lake Norman, I also enjoy driving out into the farmlands where you will see fields of yellow like this one above as mustard and various crops start to take over the rolling red soil fields.

This gorgeous photo was taken by renowned artist Cotton Ketchie, owner of Mooresville’s Landmark Gallerieswho spends much of his time driving all over North Carolina and even summer trips around the country, taking stunning photos. And, of course, he also takes some amazing photos of Lake Norman as well. If you haven’t visited his store on Main Street in Historic Downtown Mooresville you should put it on your list for 2014! He has myriad beautiful photographs like this one for sale as well as his wonderful watercolors and even North Carolina pottery. Continue reading

Most Lake Norman folks will tell you that October is usually the last month of our active boating/water sports season even though it may officially end on Labor Day. Fall is a very special season on Lake Norman.  The tree-lined shoreline becomes ablaze with vibrant shades of reds, oranges and yellows as our many Maple, Gum, Poplar and other stunning trees transform in preparation for winter with a back drop of our brilliant Carolina Blue Skies.  The reason many folks relocate to Lake Norman is because we do have 4 distinct seasons albeit very mild ones. Fall and Spring are definite my favorite times of year!

It is wonderful how one great photo like this can tell you quite a lot about Lake Norman.  The Shoal signs scattered around Lake Norman warn boaters of shallow spots or hazards.  This awesome Osprey and her nest represent one of Lake Norman’s myriad birds that are particularly treasured and even the focus of the Lake Norman Wildlife Conservation group who builds structures to encourage Osprey’s to nest.  Beyond the Shoal signs is the typical, lush, tree-lined shoreline with lovely homes peeking out enjoying the beautiful Carolina blue skies and the expansive blue water that is Lake Norman.

The Graham House in the snow

One of the most common questions I get when I first meet a new buyer relocating to Lake Norman is about our weather; especially how hot does it get in the summer and how cold in the winter.  Lake Norman enjoys very mild winters. As a snow lover I get excited each time we get a little but it rarely lasts more than a day.  However, once in a while we do get a “real snow” like in the photo above of The Graham house on Grampian Road in Mt. Ulla which is a small, rural town adjacent to Mooresville.

This gorgeous photo was taken by renowned artist Cotton Ketchie, owner of Mooresville’s Landmark Galleries, who spends much of his time driving all over North Carolina and even summer trips around the country, taking stunning photos. While searching for a great photograph for this month’s Lake Norman Real Estate’s wallpaper calendar, I came across this beautiful shot of the Mayflower 2. While it is located far from Lake Norman in Massachusetts, I thought it was a fitting and a bit different way to honor the month during which we celebrate Thanksgiving!

The original Mayflower that sailed to Plymouth in 1620 no longer exists. Plimoth Plantation’s full-scale reproduction, Mayflower II, was built in Devon, England and crossed the Atlantic in 1957. The details of the ship, from the solid oak timbers and tarred hemp rigging to the wood and horn lanterns and hand-colored maps, have been carefully re-created to give you a sense of what the original 17th-century vessel was like.

North Carolina is known for their picturesque historic light houses; from Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke Island to this one pictured above known as the Bodie Island Light Station.  This is actually the third  lighthouse built on Bodie Island to supplement the Cape Hatteras Light House as the first one was abandoned due to poor construction and the second one was blown up by retreating Confederate troops in 1861.  For years it has helped southbound ships fix their position for navigating the dangerous cape.  Now part of our National Park Service, it is still a functional navigational aid, but the tower remains closed to the public.

Historic Downtown Mooresville in the snow on Christmas

Yes, we do get a bit of snow here in the Lake Norman area!

Those of you who have followed this blog since 2007 will know that I have written about the schizophrenic nature of our Lake Norman communities along the east side of the lake where you will find the historic Main Street towns of Mooresville, (pictured above), Davidson, Cornelius and Huntersville on the east side of Interstate 77 and then the newer sides of these towns on the west side of I-77 along Lake Norman.

This gorgeous photo taken by renowned artist Cotton Ketchie, owner of Mooresville’s Landmark Galleries, captures the charm and small-town feel of Historic Downtown Mooresville so beautifully.  On the right is the window of  D.E. Turner’s Hardware Store which was opened in 1899 and where you can still buy an old-fashioned red wagon or ice cream churn for your children.    The charming street lights and restored brick storefronts make one feel like they have traveled back in time to when cotton farmers made up the majority of the 3000 residents. (Thanks to growth, particularly on the Lake Norman side, the population has grown ten-fold since then.) Continue reading

His first book, Memories of a Country Boy , is a witty account of Cotton’s childhood growing up in Mooresville.  If you are in the Lake Norman area it is well worth the time to visit him at his gallery on Main Street in Historic Downtown Mooresville.  Or, you can follow him on Facebook!  He was one of the first persons I met when I moved here in 2005.  Since then I am honored to call him and his wonderful wife Vickie friends. If you are a sunset person, then you will love Lake Norman.  Every evening offers a unique version of the photo above which I took recently at one of my waterfront listings.  Sometimes they offer a stunning contrast of the colors of a brilliant fire reflected in a dark layer of glass like this one.  Other times our sunset are soft pastel pinks, blues and yellows:

I have a special group of tools with me at all times when showing waterfront properties one of which is a tape measure to see how deep the water is at the dock and the other is a compass to determine exactly where the sun rises and sets. Some waterfront home-buyers definitely want sunsets while others want to avoid the afternoon sun and prefer sunrises.  With 520 miles of shoreline and myriad peninsulas, Lake Norman offers plenty of options for either of the above and everything in between! Without a doubt, April is my favorite month here on Lake Norman. This year’s unseasonably warm weather accentuated the annual burst of life that we enjoy every April.  Blossoms are everywhere as our trees go from sticks to fully leafed out.  Blossoming Cherry Trees (like the one above) are joined by plum, apricot, crabapple, Rosebuds and, of course, our spectacular Dogwoods.  Bright yellow Forsythia bushes and daffodils are quickly followed by the showy pick flowers of Loropedalums, Spireas.  And then, the Azaleas burst with color all over the lake shoreline.  The skis are bright blue, temperatures are mild enough for avid boaters.  Life is good! Lake Norman boating calendar

May is the month when Lake Norman truly comes back to life.  We have already had some days in the high 80 degrees this year and I now hear the familiar sound of happy squeals of children as they ride behind their parents’ boats on various tubes and make-you-dizzy contraptions.  From sailing to kayaking to Jet Skis, Lake Norman has entered its boating and recreational season which usually lasts well in to October.

Most boat owners who have wet docks will either have lifts to keep them out of the water in the winter or, if a pontoon boat, we leave them in the water year-round.  Either way, it is easy to move into action as soon as weather permits! Continue reading

September is here and it already feels like fall on Lake Norman.  The humidity of the lazy days of summer has been replaced by invigoratingly fresh air and cooler temperatures.

Some of my favorite events in Mooresville and the greater Lake Norman area occur in September; from the Denver Days Fall Festival to the Amazing Maize Maze to the just too fun Wiener Races.  (Yes, I mean Dachshunds!).

However, for this month’s photo I decide to peak ahead to October and the 36th annual Carolina Balloon Fest on October 23-25.  Many don’t know that Statesville (and Lake Norman)  NC is considered one of THE places for hot air balloons and that this annual rally is one of the largest National Balloon Rally’s!
