Okay, so I admit it.  Every year one of my New Year’s resolutions is always about fitness.  And, if you turn on a TV or read just about any news or gossip publication while in line at the market you will not escape their annual focus on health and fitness.  If it’s January, it must be time to start that exercise routine, loose the holiday pounds or start focusing on healthy eating habits.

For those of you new to Lake Norman or considering relocating here, you will be happy to know that Lake Norman has an incredible variety of fitness facilities, gyms and parks for every level/age and lifestyle.  Even during this crazy arctic cold spell there are plenty of ways to fight going stir-crazy!

Full Service Gyms and Fitness Facilities:

• Lowe’s YMCA in Mooresville  (704.716.4000) and Lake Norman YMCA in Cornelius (704.716.4400) are truly incredible facilities for the entire family. Part of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte,they offer literally thousands of programs including: Aquatics, Arts and Performing Arts, Child Care (including after school and Day Camp), Fitness and Wellness, Sports and Special Programs and Events.  Now is the time to register for spring sports including soccer, tee-ball, baseball and preschool clinics. The Lowe’s YMCA in Mooresville is truly THE place to go and the best news is there is no fee to join and they offer financial assistance for starter memberships!
• Precision Fitness (704.662.8664)  has facilities in Mooresville, Cornelius, Huntersville and Denver which offer Personal Training, Weight-loss/Metabolic Testing/Nutritional Counseling, “Serious training for Serious Athletes”, Corporate Wellness, Massage Therapy and “Look Great at The Lake” Fitness Boot Camp. Check out their “Fit Bitz” Weekly bits on fitness, nutrition and wellness as well.
• Mooresville’s Gold’s Gym (704.664.4022) offers: Aerobics, Childcare, Circuit Training, Dance, Elliptical Trainers, Free Weights, Group Spin Cycling, Kickboxing, Martial Arts, Personal Training, Plate Loaded Machines,
• In Motion Fitness has six locations including Mooresville, Cornelius and Davidson.  they offer one-on-0ne, personal training, Fit Extreme Class, group training, youth programs and sport specific conditioning. (704.895.5000).

Pilates:

Yoga/Wellness

• Ahlara International Influences for the home-body-mind-spirit-spa is located just off Williamson Rd. at 155 Joe V Knox Avenue in Mooresville.   (704.662.0946).  “Ahlara’s 150o square foot wellness center is the perfect setting for wellness classes, workshops and community events. “  They offer yoga and Tai Chi classes for “gentle flexibility and strengthening for the body as well as workshops that explore spirituality, movement, meditation, growth, abundance and freedom.

Mobile/In-Home Fitness: 

• Fusion South is a mobile/in-home fitness firm that serves Lake Norman. (303. 908.1993). I met Bobby DeMuro, founder and CEO of Fusion South on Twitter the other day.  He will meet clients at their home, office or park which sounded like a great service to me!

Of course, this list barely scratches the surface of all of the sports, recreation and fitness related activities here in Lake Norman.  But, as long as it stays this cold, these are some great options to help you keep in shape and prepare for your favorite sports!

On our way to Cornelius one day in our trusty pontoon boat I happened to notice this peculiar looking boat!  Because Lake Norman is so large we have myriad types and sizes of boats from modest fishing dingys to jet skiis to Cigarette boats. 

Lake Norman is even home to a few mega-party boats like this one owned by NASCAR race driver Tony Stewart:

At the Peninsula Yacht Club one can find a great example of the variety of boats on Lake Norman.

While I knew that there are helipads around Lake Norman and, of course, two airports, I still was quite amazed to see the helicopter above sitting on it’s own little dock right on the water.

I can’t wait for next summer!

Developers T.G Daniel, his son Tom Daniel and their new builder Brian Robinett invited a group of us to the Westport Golf  Club to learn more about the new direction of their  housing community Westport  Club  and the Westport Golf Club.  But, the highlight of  the tour was getting a sneak preview of  The Club at Westport.

Owned and operated by Robbie and Pattie Smith, who also own and manage the popular Charlotte Racket Club North, Pattie told us that this spectacular new club is the result of everything they have learned from their other club. 

The 6000 square foot Club House is home to their fitness center, a mult-purpose room for such things as aerobics, pilates and yoga, a pro shop, locker rooms, snack bar, meeting room and a member lounge with a big screen TV.

The  wrap around porch overlooks the tennis courts, pool and views of Westport.

 The beautiful 8 lighted clay courts have a special underground watering system so the courts are always perfect and never in need of overhead watering.

Those that know Robbie Smith will remember that he is a former world-ranked tennis player and nationally recognized teaching pro.  This new Tennis Facility will offer year-round programs, league play, club tournaments and lessons for all  ages.

The spacious Fitness Center has brand new PRECOR equipment, free weights, and numerous cardio machines from tread mills to stairmasters.    And, they will be open 24/7 to accomodate all of their members’ lifestyles. 

Precision Fitness will be staffing the center and will oversee all of the classes and personal training.

 The swim club actually offers two pools.  For the serious swimmer, there is is an 8-lane wake-free pool designed for top level competitive swimming.

But, the obvious highlight is the 42′ “double flume” water slide!  For the younger children there is a splash pool as well.

From competitive swim teams to water aerobic classes, there truly is something for everyone, even full-time lifeguards.

The Club at Westport, with the Westport Golf Club just a golf-cart ride away, a variety of  housing opportunities and even plans for a commercial area all combine to make Westport THE community in Denver and even the entire west side of Lake Norman!

Relocating to Lake Norman

My home buyers relocating or buying real estate in the Lake Norman area come here for the most part for the beauty, the mild weather and quality of life of lake living. Lake Norman is known for it’s great water sports including competitive water skiing. But, what many don’t know is that Lake Norman is only about 90 minutes from some great SNOW skiing as well.

From downhill and slalom skiing for all levels, to snow boarding, ice skating and sledding our local Appalachian mountains have it all and they are truly an easy two-hour drive in most cases!

As of this morning, one of the most popular ski resort, Appalachian Ski Moutain has 45″ – 69″ of packed power, their lifts are open and all but wo of their slopes are open including their three black diamond slopes for you serious Lake Norman skiiers!

To the right is a photo taken from their webcam of what the slopes looked like when I visited their site several minutes ago.

Like many of the local ski resorts, Appalachian Ski Mountain has several live webcams, up to date statistics on snow conditions, weather and slopes.

Another popular ski resort with Lake Norman residents is the Cataloochee Ski Area located in nearby Maggi Valley. They also offer all levels of skiing and daily updates on their website about daily snow conditions, slopes and weather.

Other ski and snow tubing resorts in the nearby Great Smokey Mountains (particularly the greater Boone area which is only 90 miles or so from Lake Norman) include:

Hawksnest Snow Tubing Resort which is a leader in snow tubing according to a recent article in the Charlotte Observer.

Sapphire Valley Ski Resort and Frozen Falls Tube Park is located 1.5 hours southwest of Ashville.

Ski Beech at Beech Mountain which is located nearby Boone NC.

Sugar Mountain Resort in Banner Elk near Boone who hosts the “National Winder Trail Days, a nation-wide event offer children and adults the opportunity to try snowshoeing for free. They offer over 600 new ski packages and 100 new snowboard packages!

Wolf Ridge Ski Resort is located in Mars Hill about 30 miles north of Ashville.

There are also other winter activities like sledding and tubing in our local mountains.

So, if you are considering buying a home in the Lake Norman area, you can add snow sports and beautiful mountains just 90 minutes away to your list of reasons why!
