Wow, I can’t believe December is here!

In the Lake Norman area our gorgeous hardwood trees are now bare and most of our perennial flowers are going into hibernation for the winter.  But, our Fescue lawns are still bright green and pansies bring new color to entrances to subdivisions and shopping areas.

The good news is that because of the bare trees our views of the lake have never been better! During these next 4 months, homes with “seasonal views” will truly enjoy the best of Lake Norman.

Looking Glass Rock in the Blue Ridge Mountains

As beautiful as it is right here in Lake Norman in October, taking a trip up to the Blue Ridge Mountains to see the fall colors is a ritual for many folks who live anywhere near the Appalachian Mountains.

If you live in Lake Norman, the mountains are only an hour and a half away so you can easily make it a day trip if you are limited in time.  My favorite town is definitely Asheville which is not only at the Blue Ridge Parkway but where you can also enjoy a visit to The Biltmore or a stay at the beautiful Grove Park Inn. According to the Asheville Fall Color Forecast the trees are just starting to turn due to the later warm weather.

Another fun thing to do is to take the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad fall foliage train ride. Dress warmly if you go.  The year we went we wanted to sit outside and even down ski jackets weren’t enough!

With the 38th Annual Carolina BalloonFest just around the corner,  I was thrilled to receive this stunning photo taken by one of our readers and a local Lake Norman resident, Terri Shoemaker.   She took this photo of a hot air balloon barely clearing the trees on our Lake Norman shoreline from a moving vehicle.  Wow! Thank you to Terri for allowing me to use this as our September calendar photo!

December is a peaceful month on Lake Norman.  Most of our deciduous trees have gone dormant so the homes along our shorelines are now more visible and those of us with “seasonal water views” can now look out our windows and enjoy the beauty of our Lake Norman every day!

Lake Norman, Our Inland Sea

Life in Lake Norman NC in June is all about the lake.  If you are a boater, skier, sailor or an enthusiast of myriad other water sports and recreation, most likely the lake will be your home away from home this month.

But there is another side of Lake Norman’s gifts to us lucky enough to live here and that is the flora and fauna; the wonders of mother nature.  Thanks to the growing efforts by Duke Energy AND many passionate residents, our lake continues to be home to an incredible array of wildlife, both furry and with feathers!

One of my favorites is the Blue Heron.  If you are lucky, you might see a Blue Heron walking along the shoreline or taking majestic flight like the photo above.
