Our wildlife is one of the things that makes Lake Norman such a special place to live.  While we are so close to shopping, restaurants and just about everything you can think of, at home we experience myriad types of wildlife.  From deer and foxes to bunnies and turtles, we see nature everywhere, but nothing is more amazing than our birds!  I have a Certified Wildlife Habitat back yard and our 16 feeders have activity every day of the year including Blue Birds, Cardinals, Golden Finches, Carolina Wrens, various and colorful woodpeckers, hummingbirds and so many more. But if you are lucky enough to live in a waterfront home on the lake or have a boat, then you will have many opportunities to see the stunning, graceful Heron and amazing Osprey.

To make your desktop calendar just click on the link above and then right click and select “set as background”.

I would love to use one of your favorite photos depicting life here in Lake Norman. (Optimum size is a landscape photo about 2MB or about 1600 x 1200 pixels). I will give a $25 Gas Card to anyone who provides a photo that I use as one of my monthly calendars. One of my favorite things about life in Lake Norman is my Certified Wildlife Habitat Garden.  It has grown over the past 10 years from red clay to an amazing retreat where I can enjoy myriad plants, flowers and Lake Norman’s wide array of birds, wildlife and butterflies without ever leaving my house.  Here is a photo of my pond and waterfall area from last April: Continue reading

Lake Norman Backyard Wildlife Fair is this Saturday!

Lake Norman Wildlife Garden

One of my favorite things about living in Lake Norman is the incredible variety and numbers of colorful birds, butterflies and furry critters.  Creating a “Certified Wildlife Habitat” garden is easy and very rewarding!  Every time I look out our windows I feel like I am in a Disney world alive with Golden Finches (above), Cardinals, Blue Birds, Hummingbirds, Chickadees…the list goes on and on.  Of course, we also attract deer, chipmunks, bunnies and squirrels with their own feeders although one day the squirrel above decided it would be fun to join the birds!

This Saturday, October 1st, you can learn all about how to qualify your own garden (it is SO easy), learn about Native Plants from local experts, learn how to attract wildlife and prepare your garden at the Wild Over Lake Norman! Backyard Wildlife Fair  which is being held from 11am-3pm at Duke Power’s Energy Explorium on Hwy 73 at the south end of Lake Norman.  (At the McGuire Nuclear Station).  There will be plenty of children’s activities plus exhibits on native plants, birds and butterflies.

I will be at the Wild Over Lake Norman! Certified Habitat Garden booth from 1pm-3pm so drop by and say hi!  Here is More:

Lake Norman NC Wildlife Cruise: September 19, 2009

Lake Norman's Lady of the Lake

When you think of enjoying the extraordinary wildlife and beauty of Lake Norman an image of the Lady of the Lake yacht might not come to mind.  However, The Lake Norman Wildlife Cruise on September 19th combines an educational tour while enjoying hors d’oeuvres, a bar and a live auction.

Sponsored by the Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationists, a grassroots chapter of the North Carolina Wildlife Federation,  this 3.5 hour cruise will be narrated, educational tour will focus on “islands, animal and plant species, and ongoing conservation projects that help protect those species.”

Appropriate for children and adults of all ages, this sounds like a great afternoon for learning more about our beautiful Lake Norman as well as simply enjoying a tour of the lake while being spoiled in the Lady of the Lake yacht.
