Happy New Year and welcome to 2020! Our January calendar features a local landmark only minutes from downtown Charlotte and Lake Norman. The Historic Croft Schoolhouse, located in North Mecklenburg County was built in 1890 as a community school. Croft was a small farming village with the Davis General Store as the village hub. The Davis General Store remains in operation and is a step back into time offering traditional mercantile and local favorites.
The Croft School remained in operation as a school until the 1930’s when school consolidation across the state left it vacant. As Charlotte grew the village of Croft was absorbed into the Charlotte city limits, and over the years the building served many other purposes. In the late 1990’s the Charlotte Historic Landmark Commission deemed the Croft area a Historic District and restored the Croft Schoolhouse, and it began its new chapter as an operational building. In 2012 the founders of Pioneer Springs Community School discovered the historic building and they decided to grow a new community school in this special place. Since then, the little school has grown into a tuition-free, public charter school and their campus now sprawls both directions and includes another historic property, the Davis House on the south end of the campus and the Asbury building on the north end of the campus. The school is currently enrolling for their 2020-21 school year for grades Kindergarten-9th grade. The school grows a grade each year through 12th grade.
