Download this month’s Lake Norman calendar here
In keeping with the historic theme of my last article: Lake Norman Waterfront Lots for Sale: $795 and $10 Down, I decided to choose this photograph of the Murray’s Mill Historic Site ablaze with fall colors for this month’s calendar. If you are looking for a great place to picnic or enjoy a bit of local history, Murray’s Mill Historic Site in Catawba County includes the 1913 mill itself, the 1890s Murray & Minges General Store, the 1880s Wheathouse, used as an exhibit gallery, the 1913 John Murray House, furnished to the period, and numerous outbuildings.
The centerpiece of the historic district is Murray’s Mill, built by John Murray, whose father, William, had operated a mill on the site since 1883. In 1913, John replaced his father’s mill with the current two-story structure, adding a 22’ overshot waterwheel, in lieu of the former turbine. They still have the one-ton French buhr millstones, for grinding corn, as well as Sprout & Waldron roller mills that John installed for grinding wheat into flour.
Just on a personal note, my father volunteered for years at the Bale Grist Mill in the California State Park in Napa Valley and was a trustee of the Society for the Preservaton of Old Mills so this one is for you Dad!
This gorgeous photo was taken by renowned artist Cotton Ketchie, owner of Mooresville’s Landmark Galleries, who spends much of his time driving all over North Carolina and even summer trips around the country, taking stunning photos. And, of course, he also takes some amazing photos of Lake Norman as well. If you haven’t visited his store on Main Street in Historic Downtown Mooresville you should put it on your list for 2014! He has myriad beautiful photographs like this one for sale as well as his wonderful watercolors and even North Carolina pottery.

I would love to use one of your favorite photos depicting life here in Lake Norman. (Optimum size is a landscape photo about 2MB or about 1600 x 1200 pixels). I will give a $25 Gas Card to anyone who provides a photo that I use as one of my monthly calendars.
