Newcomers to Lake Norman don’t always appreciate just how big our beautiful lake actually is and how many types of boating it accomodates. We have two yacht clubs that offer wonderful sailing activities, comraderie and competitions. This photo is of a race just off the Brawley School Road Peninsula in Mooresville on a beautiful summer’s day. If you look closely on the far right you can see the Lake Norman Yacht Club. I have very fond memories of crewing in sailing races as a child. The boats were small but the races were serious and lots of fun!
This gorgeous photo was taken by renowned artist Cotton Ketchie, owner of Mooresville’s Landmark Galleries, who spends much of his time driving all over North Carolina and even summer trips around the country, taking stunning photos. And, of course, he also takes some amazing photos of Lake Norman as well. If you haven’t visited his store on Main Street in Historic Downtown Mooresville you should put it on your list for 2014! He has myriad beautiful photographs like this one for sale as well as his wonderful watercolors and even North Carolina pottery. Continue reading
It’s June and it’s definitely time to get out on Lake Norman! Whether you enjoy sailing, power boating, water sports of all kinds including water skiing, wake boarding, wind surfing, kayaking, rowing, paddle boarding, tubing, swimming, fishing or just plain handing out on the water or on one of the myriad islands with your friends Lake Norman is the place to have fun in the summer!
As you can see from the photo above, Lake Norman is a huge lake that can accommodate large sail and power boats of all kinds. There are two yacht clubs, the Lake Norman Yacht Club in Mooreville down Brawley School Rd adjacent to the Trump International Golf Club and The Peninsula Yacht Club located in the luxury community The Peninsula in Cornelius. There is also a non-profit: North Carolina Sailing and Rowing center at Blythe landing that offers lessons and sailing and rowing programs to the public at minimal costs.

What better way to spend a summer weekend than on our beautiful Lake Norman?! Want to share the day with a few thousand friends, a live, on-water band and all sorts of fun? Then check out AqualPalooza Lake Norman 2010 which is next Saturday, July 31st from 11:00am – 5pm at the Midway Marina at the HWY 150 bridge.
What is AquaPalooza? Basically it is a huge celebration; the largest boating event on Lake Norman this summer. According to their Facebook page, they already have over 350 boats and 2,500 guests registered to attend. AquaPalooza “is the name given to a series of on-water celebrations held during the last two weeks of July at more than 100 locations around the world. Each gathering features fun activities for family, friends of all ages!”.
The sponsor this year is Sea Ray of Lake Norman. It is a free event which is open to all boaters featuring live music and “many giveaways”.
May in Lake Norman is the time to return our focus to our wonderful lake. While it has been warm enough to go boating for at least a month, Memorial Day is the official kick off of our summer boating season. And it starts with a bang!
I took the picture above last year at the Peninsula Yacht Club in Cornelius. To me it reflects the variety of boats we see out on the lake. From Jet Ski’s to sail boats, just about anything goes on our lake! (Add in fishing, canoes, kayaks, windsurfing too).
